Japanese Pebble Weaving

Japanese Pebble Weaving with Fine Centre Cane

There is something particularly satisfying about combining two simple natural materials to create something completely individual. Japanese-inspired pebble weaving uses fine lengths of cane wrapped and woven around smooth stones to create decorative objects that celebrate the natural shape and character of each pebble.

The finished pieces can be wonderfully simple or surprisingly intricate, with the pattern of the cane changing according to the shape of the stone and the way it is wrapped.

What is pebble weaving?

Pebble weaving involves taking a smooth stone and gradually wrapping or weaving fine cane around its surface. Rather than completely hiding the pebble, the aim is usually to allow the stone itself to remain part of the design, using the cane to create lines, crossings and patterns around it.

Smooth, rounded or slightly flattened pebbles are particularly suitable, but part of the appeal is experimenting with different shapes and seeing how the weave develops around them.

Why use fine centre cane?

For something as small and detailed as a pebble, ordinary basket-making materials can simply be too heavy.

Fine centre cane is ideal because its small diameter allows it to follow the contours of the stone and create much more delicate patterns. Centre cane is made from the core of rattan and is available in a range of diameters for different basketry and craft applications.

For pebble weaving, the finer sizes are particularly useful, allowing several strands and crossings to be incorporated without overwhelming the stone itself.

Preparing your centre cane

Centre cane should be softened before you begin so that it can bend around the pebble without cracking. Fine cane needs considerably less soaking than heavier basketry materials; Basketry & Beyond specifically notes that small-diameter centre cane may need little more than dipping rather than prolonged soaking.

Keep the cane damp while you work and gently form it around the stone. As natural rattan dries, it becomes firmer again, helping the finished weave retain its shape.

What you'll need

  • A smooth pebble or small stone
  • Fine centre cane
  • A bowl or container of water
  • Cane cutters or sharp scissors
  • A towel to keep the prepared cane damp

Then it is really a case of experimenting. Start with a simple wrap around the pebble before gradually crossing the cane over itself and introducing additional strands. The shape of the stone will often help determine where the pattern goes.

A small project with endless possibilities

One of the lovely things about pebble weaving is that no two pieces ever need to look the same. Different coloured stones, varying cane thicknesses and alternative wrapping patterns can completely change the finished result.

They can be used simply as decorative objects, paperweights, or small handmade gifts, and they are a great way to experiment with fine cane before moving on to more detailed basketry work.
